Sariola Dark - Dark roast decaf coffee from Colombia

Chocolate • Dark grape • Sweet

Sariola Dark is a dark roast decaf coffee from Colombia: full-bodied and chocolatey, just without the caffeine. If you’re wondering whether dark roast coffee has more caffeine, or what makes a good dark decaf, you’ll find the answers below.

The dark roast version of Sariola has notes of chocolate and dark grape with a light sweetness. As a light roast, the coffee brings out flavours of nougat, toffee and wild strawberry instead.

Decaf coffee is great at any time of day, and modern processing methods make it possible for the coffee to keep its characteristic flavours even when the caffeine is removed.

We recommend the Sariola dark roast for filter brewing methods and for espresso.

Decaffeination process

The caffeine in Sariola is removed using the EA method. The coffee beans are sorted and steamed for 30 minutes at low pressure, which prepares the coffee for decaffeination by opening up its so-called pores. The coffee is then placed in a solution of water and ethyl acetate. EA is a naturally occurring compound and solvent obtained as a by-product of fermentation. The solution binds to the salts of chlorogenic acids that coffee naturally contains. The tank is drained and refilled over eight hours until no more caffeine is detected. Finally, the coffee is dried and packed for shipping.

Frequently asked questions

Does dark roast coffee have more caffeine?

Not really. The roast level doesn’t significantly change the caffeine content of coffee, and any difference in the cup usually comes from whether the coffee is measured by weight or by volume. If you want dark coffee without the caffeine, Sariola Dark is made for you: its caffeine has been removed with the EA method.

Is Sariola Dark a decaf coffee?

Yes. Sariola’s caffeine is removed with the EA method, in which the beans are steamed and the caffeine is dissolved in water and ethyl acetate. EA is a naturally occurring compound. The coffee keeps its characteristic flavours, and decaf coffee is fine to drink at any time of day or night.

What does a dark roast decaf taste like?

Sariola Dark tastes of chocolate and dark grape, with a light sweetness. The light roast Sariola brings out flavours of nougat, toffee and wild strawberry.

What brewing method suits Sariola Dark?

We recommend the Sariola dark roast for filter brewing methods and for espresso. When you order, choose the grind to match your brewer, or order whole beans if you grind your coffee yourself.

Is Sariola Dark a good gift?

Yes. Sariola Dark is a full-bodied, chocolatey decaf coffee from Colombia, so it makes a great gift for a dark coffee lover who also drinks coffee in the evening. If you don’t know what brewer the recipient uses, choose filter grind, and for someone who makes boiled coffee, choose boiled coffee grind. You can send the gift straight to the recipient without a trip to the post office.
