A Christmas gift for a coffee lover? Väinö's Christmas gift guide 2026
Christmas is coming again, and the gift list is as empty as Olli's coffee bins on a Friday night. For this Christmas gift guide yours truly rounded up the best gifts for coffee lovers: coffee with your own photo, a coffee gift box, Joulukahvi, a coffee subscription as a gift and brewing gear for the home barista. So if you're wondering what to get grandpa for Christmas, or what would make a good Christmas gift for your parents, you're in the right place.
Text brought into the world by: Väinö Siitari, son of roaster Olli and Santa's self-appointed coffee supplier (Santa hasn't had time to answer the email yet. According to the elves, there's a lot of whispering in Mrs Claus's chamber.)
Dear visitors who've wandered onto our site!
Christmas comes on exactly the same day every year, and yet it surprises us every time. One day it's October, and the next you're standing in a shopping centre with your third pack of candles, wondering whether it would do for your mother-in-law.
Well, dash it all, this year we're doing things differently. Coffee is a gift that actually gets used, and it won't sit at the back of a cupboard waiting for the next flea market (hopefully). And if the recipient doesn't drink coffee, we've solved that too. Do read to the end, since you've made it this far.
What's the best gift for a coffee lover?
Short, but not small: fresh coffee roasted with that particular person in mind. Here are our four sure-fire coffee gifts that will sort out Christmas presents for the whole family.
1. Coffee with your own photo, the gift grandma will still be chattering about at midsummer
Coffee with your own photo is a photo gift that also gets drunk. An easy, affordable and above all fun gift. Your own photo and text go on the bag's label, and inside goes Olli's roast of Yellow Bourbon or Topazio. Coffee with your own label has been one of our most popular gifts for a long time: there are over 70 reviews, with an average of 4.9 stars out of five. One customer gave a bag to her husband as a wedding anniversary gift and called it "an absolutely amazing gift". Well, one customer also said they were "even a bit embarrassed to give this kind of scribble alongside a wedding anniversary gift". We've learned from our mistakes, and the product and product texts have been clarified and improved.
Photo tip: recipients don't usually want to look at their own face every morning next to the coffee maker. The best photo is of the grandkids, a pet or the whole family. Memories always work too! Portrait photo, 10 x 14 cm. I wrote a whole post about choosing the photo, if you want to dig deeper.
Product spotlight
Coffee with your own photo costs €14.90 for a 225 g bag, €23.30 for a 500 g bag and €39.60 for a 1 kg bag. So if grandpa's getting coffee, look at the bigger sack: the price per kilo drops a lot, and grandpa won't be ringing on 1 January to say the coffee's run out. To be continued…
2. Kirjala Gift Box, a coffee gift set
Kirjala Gift Box was created for everyone who can't stand soft parcels. It's also a great choice if you can't face scrolling through your entire phone gallery for coffee with your own photo. The box has three 250 g coffees, and the price is €36. You can choose the coffees yourself, or let Olli pick his three favourite coffees, the roaster's favourites. (He picks them at least as carefully as I pick my socks every morning, choosing between coffee grinder socks and dog socks.) A ready gift coffee that doesn't even need wrapping.
3. Joulukahvi, the best Christmas coffee for those who like spiced coffee
Joulukahvi is a medium roast blend of Topazio and Heirloom, with a moderate amount of cinnamon, bitter orange, cardamom and ginger. Joulukahvi was originally born from Olli and Sari's night shifts in Heimari, so it was quite literally made by the sweat of their brows. It tastes just Christmassy enough, but the coffee still tastes like coffee. Customers have given it an average of 4.8 stars out of five. Joulukahvi is only available filter ground: 250 g €10.90, 500 g €21.30 and 1 kg €42.10.
And now the best part. Olli hides an "almond" in a few bags of Joulukahvi, and whoever finds it gets a kilo of coffee. So Joulukahvi is also the only Christmas gift that can bring you more Christmas gifts. Blimey, that's a pretty decent offer! (Last year the almond was a big, carefully disinfected shirt button, so no need to panic. The button is also impossible to swallow, UNLESS you have a habit of measuring coffee into the filter with your mouth.)
4. A coffee subscription as a gift, the gift that keeps going all year
If the recipient is a true coffee lover, a coffee subscription is the gift that reminds them of you every month. We have two different monthly subscriptions, and both can be posted or picked up: Oma seikkailu and Kahviseikkailu. The coffee comes to your door by post, or you can pick it up from our café in Mikkeli. Only now did I start to wonder whether it's nice to make the recipient trek to our café to collect their subscription every month? Might need to rethink that one...
What to get grandpa for Christmas?
Grandpas are a breed of their own. You ask what he'd like, and every year the answer is the same: "I don't need anything, don't you go bringing me anything". That's why a consumable gift is the best gift for grandpa. Coffee with your own photo featuring the grandkids is practically a guaranteed win. If grandpa drinks dark coffee, pick one from our dark roast coffees. A boiled coffee fan doesn't usually want to try fruity light roasts on Christmas Eve, and that's perfectly fine.
Which Christmas gift for whom?
- Christmas gift for parents and grandparents: Coffee with your own photo, featuring the grandkids. Add Joulukahvi on the side, and you're this year's favourite child.
- Christmas gift for mum: Kirjala Gift Box filled with her favourite coffees, or a fruity light roast such as Vipunen. Mum doesn't usually wish for anything, but good coffee always goes down well.
- Christmas gift for dad: a dark roast coffee ground for boiled coffee, such as Sammon, or Coffee with your own photo featuring the grandkids. Dad might not sing its praises out loud, but the bag empties fast.
- Christmas gift for your partner: Kirjala Gift Box and a scale for measuring quality coffee. Your weekend mornings together are sorted.
- Christmas gift for the man who has everything: a coffee subscription as a gift. Coffee gets used up and doesn't take up space in the garage. The garage is for beer, not coffee makers. You'll find more ideas in my post A gift for the man who has everything.
- Christmas gift for a colleague or office party gift: Joulukahvi or Terveiset Mikkelistä! coffee, our souvenir coffee made from Topazio and Heirloom. Terveiset Mikkelistä probably works best if you're from around here...
- Christmas gift for the home barista: brewing gear, such as the Origami M Dripper, the Hario V60 Buono pouring kettle or the Hario V60 Drip Scale coffee scale. We only have a few pieces of brewing gear in stock, so don't wait too long.
- When you have no idea at all: a gift card. It's not laziness, it's respecting freedom of choice. That's how I justify it, anyway.
Please note
The gift card comes in values of €10, €25, €50 or €100, and it arrives by email instantly. It can be used in the online shop and at our café, but not for monthly subscriptions.
Can I send the gift straight to the recipient?
You can. At checkout, enter the recipient's address under Delivery, and under Payment untick "Use shipping address as billing address". Then the invoice comes to you and the gift goes to the recipient. There are more detailed instructions on the page Sending a gift. If anything is unclear, call or message me: +358 40 068 5877.
At Christmas it pays to order early. Matkahuolto's Lähellä-paketti is usually the fastest shipping method. Shipping is free on orders over €59 in Finland and over €89 abroad.
Tip
Buying gifts for the whole family in one go? There's a discount code for bigger orders, but it's not given away for free, because apparently Anna has got me in line. The code is hidden in my New Entrepreneur of the Year story, so read the story and spot the code.
