Frequently asked questions about medium roast coffee
Which medium roast coffee is best for you?
The best medium roast coffee is the one that suits your cup and your coffee maker. Find yours on this list:
- Smooth and sweet for espresso and milk drinks: Kalervo, Brazil: nougat, milk chocolate, berry juice
- Chocolatey and nutty, from espresso to filter: Pellervo, Brazil: chocolate, nutty, berry. Customers say it makes an amazingly good espresso and works in a latte too.
- Fruity for filter, moka pot and AeroPress: Louhi, Ethiopia: apple, white tea, citrus fruits, peach. In one customer's words, both chocolatey with a scent of fresh buns and fruity.
- Christmas flavours in your cup: Joulukahvi: a medium roast with a gentle Christmas spice, ground for filter
Kalervo and Pellervo come from the same farm, Fazenda do Cruzeiro in Brazil, and both also come as a dark roast version. Our dad Olli roasts them in small batches in Mikkeli. You can get them as whole beans or ready ground for boiled coffee, Chemex, filter, moka pot or espresso, in 250 g, 500 g and 1 kg bags. Have a look at all our Brazilian coffees too.
What do customers say about our medium roast coffees?
- Kalervo, 4.7/5 (6 reviews): “My go-to bean, it handles both espresso and filter coffee. It shines brightest with milk, though.”
- Louhi, 4.8/5 (8 reviews): “My favourite, brewed in a moka pot.”
- Pellervo, 4.4/5 (7 reviews): “Makes an amazingly good espresso! You can clearly taste a berry note, which I really like.”
- Joulukahvi, 4.8/5 (7 reviews): “A smooth coffee where you can taste Christmas just enough.”
What does medium roast coffee mean?
A medium roast sits between a light and a dark roast. The coffee keeps some of the bean's own sweetness and fruitiness, while the roast adds chocolate, nuts and smoothness. That's why medium roast coffee is the easiest and most versatile choice for many people.
Is medium roast coffee good for espresso?
Excellent. The Brazilian Kalervo and Pellervo are sweet and berry-like as espresso, and they work well in lattes and cappuccinos too. According to our customers, Pellervo proves that a latte doesn't always need a dark roast. Choose Espresso as the grind, or Bean if you grind your own coffee.
Which medium roast coffee suits milk drinks?
Kalervo and Pellervo are good both black and with milk. Both also work as espresso.
Which medium roast coffee suits a drip coffee maker?
All of them. For a balanced, chocolatey everyday coffee, choose Kalervo or Pellervo. If you prefer something fruitier, try the Ethiopian Louhi. Choose Filter as the grind.
Does a medium roast work in a moka pot, French press and AeroPress?
Yes. Our customers brew Louhi in a moka pot, a French press and an AeroPress. In a French press, use water at about 90 degrees, as boiling water can make the coffee taste burnt. The same works with an AeroPress: lower the water temperature and lengthen the brew time.
Is Joulukahvi a medium roast?
Yes. Joulukahvi is a medium roast coffee with a gentle Christmas spice, and it's sold ground for filter. The roaster hides an almond in a few batches, and whoever finds it gets a kilo of coffee.
Can I get medium roast coffees as whole beans and ground?
Yes. Choose the grind to match your brewer and we'll grind the coffee for you, or take whole beans if you grind your own.
How fresh is the coffee?
We roast several times a week, so the coffee hardly has time to sit in jars or bags for more than a moment.
Best regards, Väinö Siitari / Kirjalan Paahtimo
