Our top 3 cold drinks this summer

Hi there, summer has finally made it to Mikkeli too! For the last couple of days the temperature has been flirting with thirty degrees, so naturally we're serving loads of iced coffee drinks at the café. Olli must be roasting hot over at the roastery, but luckily the café stays cool thanks to the heat pump and our cold treat drinks.

So what are our customers drinking in this heat? Below you'll find our café's most popular coffee (and not so coffee) drinks this summer.

1. Iced latte

The classic of iced coffee drinks. This is what we sell the most on hot summer days, and no wonder, because you can customise an iced latte exactly to your taste; lots of people add a flavour syrup for a little sweetness. An iced latte works with plant-based milk or cow's milk, and you can have it with a single shot of espresso, a double or, if needed, a triple!

2. Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte

Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte: that's such a long name for a drink it's almost scary! 🍓 But nothing else about it is scary, this hit lives up to its name: sweet strawberry, ice for freshness and quality matcha on top, and there you go! We found this trendy drink deep in the depths of TikTok and wanted to offer it at our place too. Matcha usually has a little less caffeine than coffee, so this also suits those who aren't afraid of caffeine but still want a bit less of it than in coffee.

What on earth is matcha?

Matcha is Japanese green tea ground into a very fine powder. Matcha differs from regular green tea in that when you drink the whole tea leaf in powder form, you also get all the nutrients and antioxidants the tea contains. Nothing goes to waste, so to speak!

The quality matcha we use comes from TeeMaa, like the other teas we use at the café. They curate a unique selection of the very finest teas, straight from local producers in China, Japan and Nepal.

3. Cold Brew: cold-extracted coffee

So cold brew gets its flavour from steeping in the cold for at least eight hours! You can customise the drink just the way you like: have it black, mix it with milk or oat drink, or maybe even with something fizzy! You can add a splash of flavour syrup too if you feel like it!

At the café we usually make cold brew with light and medium roast coffees (read: Kesäkahvi is pretty much the best for this), to bring out all the smooth and sweet flavours! And hey, here's a recipe below if you want to try your own cold brews at home:

Brew time: 8-12 hours
Makes: 1 litre
Weigh and measure: 150 g coffee, 1 l water
Grind: Coarser than a filter grind. The coffee steeps for so long that it's better to choose a coarse grind, or alternatively cut the brew time to 8 hours.
What else: A cold brew bottle or a French press works well for steeping. Alternatively you can steep the coffee in any suitable container and strain out the grounds at the end.
Storage: The coffee keeps in the fridge for about a week in an airtight bottle or container.

Method: Put the coffee grounds in the container of your choice and pour cold water over them. Steep for about 8-12 hours at room temperature or in the fridge. That's it, all done. Your cold brew is ready to enjoy! You can add milk or flavour syrups to taste, and we definitely recommend adding ice to keep the drink ice cold and refreshing!

Fancy one of these summery cold drinks now? Try them at home or head to our café in Nuijamies to enjoy our top 3 summer cold drinks OR something else like an affogato, iced americano or espresso tonic. We do make hot coffee drinks in summer too, but we have to say we sell more cold ones when the heat is on!
