Frequently asked questions about medium roast coffee

Which medium roast coffee is best for you?

The best medium roast coffee is the one that suits your cup and your coffee maker. Find yours on this list:

  • Smooth and sweet for espresso and milk drinks: Kalervo, Brazil: nougat, milk chocolate, berry juice
  • Chocolatey and nutty, from espresso to filter: Pellervo, Brazil: chocolate, nutty, berry. Customers say it makes a fantastic espresso and works in a latte too.
  • Fruity for filter, moka pot and AeroPress: Louhi, Ethiopia: apple, white tea, citrus, peach. In one customer's words both chocolatey with a scent of cinnamon buns and fruity.
  • Christmas in a cup: Christmas coffee: a medium roast with a gentle Christmas spice, ground for filter

Kalervo and Pellervo come from the same farm, Fazenda Cruzeiro in Brazil, and both also come as a dark roast. Our dad Olli roasts them in small batches in Mikkeli. You can get them as whole beans or ground for boiled coffee, Chemex, drip coffee, moka pot or espresso, in 250 g, 500 g and 1 kg bags.

What do customers say about our medium roasts?

  • Kalervo, 4.6/5 (5 reviews): “My go-to bean, it handles both espresso and filter coffee. It shines brightest with milk, though.”
  • Louhi, 4.8/5 (8 reviews): “My favourite, brewed in a moka pot.”
  • Pellervo, 4.3/5 (6 reviews): “Makes a fantastic espresso! You can clearly taste a berry note, which I really like.”
  • Christmas coffee, 4.8/5 (6 reviews): “A smooth coffee with just the right amount of Christmas in it.”

What does medium roast coffee mean?

A medium roast sits between a light and a dark roast. The coffee keeps some of the bean's own sweetness and fruitiness, while the roast adds chocolate, nuts and smoothness. That is why medium roast coffee is the easiest and most versatile choice for many.

Is medium roast coffee good for espresso?

Very good. The Brazilian Kalervo and Pellervo are sweet and berry-like as espresso, and they work well in lattes and cappuccinos too. Our customers say Pellervo proves a latte doesn't always need a dark roast. Choose Espresso as the grind, or Bean if you grind it yourself.

Which medium roast coffee suits a drip coffee maker?

All of them. For a balanced, chocolatey everyday coffee choose Kalervo or Pellervo. If you prefer something fruitier, try the Ethiopian Louhi. Choose Filter as the grind.

Does medium roast work in a moka pot, French press and AeroPress?

Yes. Our customers brew Louhi in a moka pot, a French press and an AeroPress. In a French press, use water at about 90 °C, as boiling water can make the coffee taste burnt. The same works with an AeroPress: lower the water temperature and lengthen the brew time.

Is the Christmas coffee a medium roast?

Yes. Our Christmas coffee is a medium roast with a gentle Christmas spice, sold ground for filter. The roaster hides an almond in a few batches, and whoever finds it gets a kilo of coffee.

How fresh is the coffee?

We roast several times a week, so your coffee is sent out fresh and has not been sitting on a shop shelf.

Best regards, Väinö, the latest offspring produced by Olli and Sari.
