Frequently asked questions about light roast coffee

Which light roast coffee is best for you?

The best light roast coffee is the one that suits your cup and your coffee maker. Find yours on this list:

  • Sweet and berry-like for every day: Vipunen, Ethiopia: berry, honey, juicy. Customers say it works at different grind sizes, with a V60 and as cold brew.
  • Bright and fruity filter coffee: Halo Beriti, Ethiopia: apricot, citrus, almond. Customers also give it as a Christmas gift.
  • A smooth light roast, also for espresso: Aino, Colombia: green apple, milk chocolate, nougat. Customers say even dark roast fans enjoy it.
  • Something completely different: Women's Crown, Rwanda: orange, sweet apple, cherry notes, yoghurt. An experimental micro lot grown and processed by women.
  • A light roast without caffeine: Sariola Light, Colombia: nougat, toffee, wild strawberry, nectarine. One customer bought it as an evening coffee and now drinks it all day.

Light roasts are at their best as filter coffee and pour over. Our dad Olli roasts them in small batches in Mikkeli. You can get them as whole beans or ground for boiled coffee, Chemex, drip coffee, moka pot or espresso, in 250 g, 500 g and 1 kg bags.

What does light roast coffee mean?

In a light roast the coffee bean is roasted for a shorter time than in a dark roast. The bean's own flavours, such as fruit, berries and florals, come through, and the acidity is bright. In a light roast you can clearly taste which country and farm the coffee comes from.

Is light roast coffee sour?

A well brewed light roast is bright and fruity, not sour. A sour taste usually comes from too coarse a grind or water that is too cool. If you want a smoother light roast, try Aino with its milk chocolate and nougat notes.

Does light roast coffee have more caffeine?

Hardly. Light and dark roasts contain about the same amount of caffeine. The amount of coffee and the brewing method matter more than the roast level. If you want a light roast without caffeine, choose Sariola Light.

How should I brew light roast coffee?

Light roasts shine as filter coffee: in a drip brewer, a Chemex or as pour over, for example with a Hario V60. Customers say Aino works both as espresso and with a V60, and they also make cold brew iced coffee from Vipunen. You'll find the gear among our coffee brewing equipment.

Is light roast coffee good in a drip coffee maker?

Yes. Choose Filter as the grind and your ordinary coffee maker will brew a bright and sweet cup. For everyday coffee we recommend Vipunen, which customers say makes a balanced cup easily.

How fresh is the coffee?

We roast several times a week, so your coffee is sent out fresh. A light roast also benefits from a short rest: one customer found Aino's flavours settled best about 2.5 weeks after roasting.

Best regards, Väinö, the latest offspring produced by Olli and Sari.
